of Broadcast Journalists

Liz and Lindsey

When you’re watching NCTV17, you’re not only watching your community but you’re also watching the next generation of broadcast journalists. Guided by the Emmy award-winning expertise of Executive Director Liz Spencer, two NCTV17 journalists have caught the eye of larger television broadcast stations. “Naperville News 17” Producer Lindsey Theis begins this week at the CNN World Headquarters in Atlanta as a Video Journalist; she won the coveted position over 500 applicants from across the country. Earlier this month, Reporter Elitsa Bizios began at the ABC Affiliate WCTI12 in North Carolina as the News Channel 12 Weekend Producer/Anchor.

Theis began with NCTV17 as a broadcast communication student at North Central College under Spencer as Adjunct Faculty. She completed an internship at NCTV17, and then spent the next two and a half years as a Reporter and Producer at NCTV17 where she was instrumental in the development of the award-winning news program “Naperville News 17.” During her tenure at NCTV17, she also helped produce documentaries including “The Naperville Riverwalk: The First 25 Years,” and served as Producer for NCTV17’s first live program on election coverage. Theis cites experience with Spencer and NCTV17 as key in her new career move.

“I’m excited to start at CNN, but wouldn’t have been able to get there without the opportunities at Naperville Community Television and the leadership of Executive Director Liz Spencer,” said Theis. “She’s an amazing producer, mentor, leader, and boss who has given me the chance to help work on and create a truly unique local newscast.”

In early November, Reporter/Producer Elitsa Bizios began with the ABC Affiliate WCTI12 in North Carolina as the Weekend Producer/Anchor for News Channel 12. Bizios began at NCTV17 as a high school intern, continued with a college internship while a student at Columbia College, and then as NCTV17 staff, she worked as a Reporter for “Naperville News 17,” Producer for “Spotlight on Naperville,” and Associate Producer for the documentary “Moments in Time.”

“While it’s hard to say good-bye, we are excited about the next career steps for these two outstanding young women,” said Spencer. “At NCTV17, we are committed to educating the next generation of broadcast journalists. We are giving them real world hands-on experience and look forward to watching their careers progress.”

Spencer and the NCTV17 staff have been preparing for the transitions for some time. The “Naperville News 17” team will be welcoming two new reporters in early December.
